It is an English-based creole language and is written in the Latin alphabet.
Bislama (English: ; Bislama: [bislaˈma]; also known by its former French name Bichelamar [biʃlamaʁ]) is a creole language, one of the official languages of Vanuatu. It is the first language of many “urban Ni-Vanuatu” (those living in Port Vila and Luganville), and the second language of much of the rest of the country’s population. “Yumi, Yumi, Yumi”, the national anthem of Vanuatu, is in Bislama. More than 95% of Bislama words are of English origin. The remainder combines a few dozen French words, along with some vocabulary inherited from various languages of Vanuatu, mainly limited to terms for plants and animals. While the overall influence of these vernacular languages is low in vocabulary, it is very high in morphosyntax. Bislama can essentially be described as a language with English vocabulary and Oceanic grammar and phonology.
